A small, volunteer-run local history museum in the market town of Kington. It is housed in the former stable block of a coaching inn that was demolished in the 1880s, and it now spans four rooms. The museum tells the story of the town and the surrounding district from prehistoric times, using frequently changing exhibitions. Recent displays have covered the First World War, farming, milling, Church Street through time, the former Lady Hawkins School, the 1950s and a fine collection of clocks. Families with older children who enjoy local stories and old objects will find plenty to look at, and the volunteers are happy to talk through the displays. It is a short, easy visit to combine with a walk around the town. Admission is free, with donations welcomed, and groups can arrange a visit by appointment.
Questions parents ask
- Is it suitable for young children, or is it mainly of interest to adults?
- The museum covers four rooms with frequently changing exhibitions on topics including farming, milling, clocks and local history. It's volunteer-run and staff are noted as enthusiastic and happy to explain displays, though the page does not specify which ages get most from a visit.
- Can we visit if we have a pushchair or buggy?
- We haven't confirmed whether the museum is buggy-friendly. You could contact them directly to ask about access with a pushchair before visiting.
- Is there a café, or should we bring a packed lunch?
- We haven't confirmed a café at the museum. On one special opening in December they serve mulled apple juice, but there's no regular catering information available.
- How long should we allow for a visit?
- The museum covers four rooms with changing exhibitions, but the page does not state how long a typical visit lasts. This may depend on your children's age and interests, so it would be worth asking the museum directly.
- Do we need to book in advance, or can we turn up on the day?
- General visitors can turn up, but groups need to visit by appointment. Contact the museum if you're bringing a group of children.
