The Hirsel Homestead sits in the stable courtyard of the Hirsel Estate, on the western edge of Coldstream, and combines a small museum of rural life with craft workshops, a café and a farm shop. The museum occupies several converted outbuildings and shows how people lived and worked on the estate, with displays of forestry and farm equipment, gardening tools and laundry equipment, plus material from archaeological digs on the land. The wider estate is a large mix of parkland, woodland and lake, and a set of walks runs from the courtyard past Hirsel Lake, along the Leet valley and into a woodland noted for its rhododendrons and azaleas. Families can combine a look round the museum with a walk, a bite to eat and a browse in the craft shops. The estate also keeps a herd of Highland cattle that visitors can see from the paths.
