Grey Point Fort is a coastal artillery battery built between 1904 and 1907 to guard the mouth of Belfast Lough. Its two large six-inch guns still sit in their emplacements, and visitors can walk around the outdoor gun positions, the observation post and the searchlight buildings. Inside, volunteers from an amateur radio society run small museum rooms of wartime radio equipment, uniforms, medals and photographs. The fort lies within Crawfordsburn Country Park and can be reached on foot along the North Down Coastal Path, so it works well as part of a shoreline walk. Opening is irregular because the site is run by volunteers, so check current arrangements before setting out. Children with an interest in history tend to get the most from the outdoor guns and the displays.
