The Downpatrick & County Down Railway is Ireland's only full-size heritage railway, run almost entirely by volunteers at Downpatrick station. Climb aboard vintage steam and heritage diesel trains for the trip through drumlin countryside to the ruins of Cistercian Inch Abbey (a Game of Thrones filming location). Your admission covers unlimited rides for the afternoon plus the railway museum and carriage gallery, where kids can dress up in period costume. The railway hosts family events through the year — Easter, summer steam days, Halloween's Phantom Flyer and the Christmas Lapland Express — and dogs travel free. Open on running days only (selected Saturdays and Sundays, seasonal; no weekday running), so check the website calendar before you travel.
