Land of Iron is a museum in the Skinningrove Valley on the North Yorkshire coast, set on the site of the first ironstone mine in Cleveland. It tells the story of the miners and their families who supplied iron and steel during the industrial revolution, using photographs, objects and interactive displays. Families can explore the old mine buildings on a guided tour, and the exhibition is designed to hold the interest of children as well as adults, with mine-related artefacts to spot along the way. Tours are limited in size, so booking ahead is sensible in busy periods. The site also runs hands-on learning workshops for school groups, hosts talks and family history support, and has a wheelchair-accessible layout with free parking on site. Its coastal setting makes it an easy pairing with a day at the beach or the Cleveland Way.
Questions parents ask
- Is Land of Iron manageable with a toddler and an older child at the same time?
- The attraction is step-free and has parking on site, which helps with access. However, we haven't confirmed whether it's buggy-friendly or how long a typical visit takes, so you may want to contact them before your trip to check if the hands-on experience suits multiple age groups together.
- Should we bring a packed lunch, or is there somewhere to eat?
- We haven't confirmed whether Land of Iron has a café or picnic area. Contact them directly to check what food facilities are available, or plan accordingly with a packed lunch.
- Do we need to book in advance, or can we just turn up?
- Tours are limited to 12 people at a time, and the venue recommends booking tickets in advance to avoid disappointment. It's worth booking ahead rather than risking a sold-out visit.
- What accessibility facilities are available?
- The attraction is step-free throughout, and blue-badge parking is available on site. Assistance dogs are welcome. We haven't confirmed baby changing facilities or a Changing Places toilet, so contact them if you need those.
