Set on the wartime RAF Elvington airfield on the edge of York, the Yorkshire Air Museum is one of the largest independent aviation museums in the country. The site covers around twenty acres of parkland and includes restored Second World War buildings, a Grade II listed control tower and a large collection of aircraft, from early replica gliders and flyers to a Halifax bomber and later jets. Exhibition rooms cover Bomber Command, air gunners and the French bomber crews who were based here. Families can use the custom-built aviation-themed playground, sit in the café in the original NAAFI building, and watch films in the museum cinema. Picnic areas and a woodland walk make it easy to spend a relaxed afternoon, and the museum is dog friendly outside the playground. Standard tickets allow repeat visits within twelve months.
Summer and winter hours differ; see hoursNote. Special event days may not be covered by the free re-entry rule.
