The Tees Barrage International White Water Centre sits on the River Tees beside the barrage, a short way from Stockton-on-Tees town centre. Its own site presents it as a family day out, with a man-made white water course, a flat-water lake and a range of watersports for groups. Activities include white water rafting, family rafting, canoeing and kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and bell boating, and older children can join the Air Trail, a large climbing adventure course. Courses and school holiday sessions run through the year, and the centre also runs a seasonal pantomime-style trail. Watersports are aimed at children aged eight and over, so younger siblings are better suited to the walking and cycling routes along the river and the nature reserves that link to the site. A café overlooks the lake and there is space for a picnic on the riverbank.

Questions parents ask

Which ages can do the watersports activities?
All watersports are available to people aged eight and over. Air Trail, the climbing adventure course, is also on site for older children and teens to enjoy alongside water activities.
Is there food here, or should we bring a picnic?
Cook's Café is on the top floor of the main watersports building and serves hot and cold food including sandwiches, snacks, hot dishes, salads, and ice creams. There's also a picnic area on the river bank if you'd prefer to bring your own.
Can we park there?
Yes, there is parking on site. We haven't confirmed how close it is to the entrance or whether it's suitable for buggies, so it's worth checking when you book or calling ahead.
What should we know before visiting with young children?
Watersports are for ages eight and over, so younger siblings may not participate in those activities. However, there are land-based activities like walking and cycling routes, Air Trail climbing, and nature spotting that could suit different ages.
Does bad weather cancel a visit?
Tees Barrage is available all year round, and there are both outdoor watersports and indoor or covered options like Cook's Café, the climbing course, and the nature reserve, so some activities can still work in poor weather.
