The Bar Convent is a Grade I listed Georgian house that was founded in 1686 as a secret school for girls and is still home to a community of Sisters today. Families can explore the state-of-the-art exhibition spread over several floors, which tells the story of the house through artefacts, interactive displays and the people who lived and worked there. The 18th-century chapel, built to be hidden from the street, is a favourite stop, and the Georgian parlour holds portraits of the early sisters. Family activities run during school holidays, and the building also has a café and garden where children can take a break. The site is a short walk from York railway station, so it works well as a rainy-day stop or a quieter alternative to the city's busier attractions.

Family activities run during school holidays, and the exhibition changes its temporary displays, so check what is on before a visit.
