Skipton Castle is a fully roofed medieval fortress that families can explore at their own pace. Rooms such as the kitchen, bedchambers and dungeon sit around a courtyard, and the great watch tower overlooks the market town below. The castle's history includes a three-year Civil War siege, which children can follow through the displays and a free tour sheet offered in ten languages. Older visitors and younger ones alike tend to enjoy the Castle Explorer's badge for under-18s. Outside, the grounds include a secluded picnic area with views across the town and into the woodland behind the castle. A tearoom and gift shop sit within the grounds, and the castle runs school visits and group bookings. Dogs on a short lead are welcome in most areas. Access inside the castle is limited, so families with pushchairs or wheelchairs should check the venue's access details before visiting.
