Kilburn Woods is a Forestry England woodland on the edge of the North York Moors, home to the Kilburn White Horse, a large hill figure cut into the escarpment in 1857. Families can follow the White Horse walk, which climbs steps beside the figure and continues along the top of Sutton Bank on the Cleveland Way, with wide views over the Yorkshire landscape. A second, gentler route, the Kilburn Walk, runs through mixed woodland and circles round to a view of the horse. The site has a picnic area and welcomes dogs on leads, so it suits a relaxed walk or a picnic with children. Older children may enjoy the story of the figure, which is repainted every few years and is sometimes described as the Old Grey Mare. The setting is outdoors and the paths can be steep in places, so sturdy footwear is sensible.
