The Dales Countryside Museum tells the story of the people and landscape of the Yorkshire Dales, from prehistoric times to the present day. It is housed in the former Victorian railway station at Hawes, and the conversion keeps many of the old station features. Families tend to enjoy the interactive displays, the mock-up lead mine and the object handling sessions that can be arranged for booked groups. There is a family trail and an outdoor trail to follow, and the museum runs a rolling programme of temporary exhibitions, events and guided walks around the town. Children visit free, so it suits a rainy-day visit or a stop between walks in Wensleydale. The museum shop sells local crafts and gifts. The on-site cafe was closed at the time of checking, and there are tea rooms and cafes a short walk away in Hawes.
