The World of James Herriot is set in the original home and surgery of Alf Wight, the Yorkshire vet who wrote as James Herriot. Rooms have been restored with period furnishings, tools and equipment, so the visit feels like stepping back into a 1940s country practice. Downstairs and upstairs there are sets and memorabilia linked to the All Creatures Great and Small television series, including a television studio recreation and two Austin Seven cars. A hands-on children's gallery lets younger visitors try vet-style activities, and the garden has a statue of Alf Wight. Most families spend around an hour and a half here, and it works well as a stop during a day in Thirsk or the wider North Yorkshire countryside. Fans of the books and programmes will get the most from it, though the interactive area keeps younger children busy too.
