Jervaulx Abbey is a privately owned Cistercian monastery ruin in the Yorkshire Dales, set beside the River Ure. Families can wander through the surviving church remains, the cloister and the rooms where monks once lived, with open grass and gravel paths to explore between the stonework. Wildflowers seed themselves among the old walls, so it suits a relaxed walk with children who like spotting plants and imagining life in an abbey. The site is outdoors with little shelter, so it works best in dry weather. There are no public toilets on site, and the tearooms are permanently closed, so families should plan refreshments and toilet stops in nearby towns. Dogs on leads are welcome in the parkland. Schools and groups are asked to book their visit by phone in advance. Pushchair users should expect loose gravel and some steps.
