The Scarborough Maritime Heritage Centre is a small, volunteer-run museum and archive on Eastborough, a short walk from the South Bay seafront and the harbour. Its changing and fixed exhibitions cover the town's fishing families, herring and tunny fishing, boat building, lifeboat rescues and shipwrecks, and the wartime history of the coast. Displays also touch on Scarborough's links with the Titanic. Friendly volunteers show visitors round, and video and audio recordings are available for anyone who finds reading difficult. The centre works with the Children's University and welcomes school and community groups, so it suits older children with an interest in history, the sea or local stories. Its archive is open for family and local history research. It makes a useful indoor stop on a windy or wet day between beach and promenade time, and a small history box on the seafront gives a taste of the town's story when the centre is shut.
Questions parents ask
- Is the museum buggy-friendly, and will it work with both a toddler and an older child?
- We haven't confirmed whether buggies are practical here. Contact the museum to ask about layout and accessibility for visitors with younger children.
- Is there anywhere to eat at the museum, or should we bring a picnic?
- We haven't confirmed whether there is a café. You may want to bring refreshments, or check with the museum about facilities before your visit.
- How long should we allow for a visit?
- The page does not state a typical visit length. This is a community-run museum with extensive collections on Scarborough's maritime history, so you might allow anything from an hour to a full afternoon depending on interests.
