The Rotunda Museum overlooks Scarborough's South Bay and is one of the world's earliest purpose-built museums. Its circular Georgian gallery has a frieze showing the geology of the local coastline, and the displays include fossils, marine reptile reconstructions and 11,000-year-old artefacts from the Star Carr site. The Ancient Seas gallery brings the creatures that once lived in Yorkshire to life, which suits curious children who enjoy dinosaurs and fossil hunting. The museum is compact, so a visit fits comfortably into an hour, and it pairs well with a walk along the beach or a stop at the nearby Scarborough Art Gallery. The building is accessible, with a lift to all floors and no steps into the galleries, and ear defenders are available on request.
