How Stean Gorge is a steep limestone ravine in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Families can follow the winding paths and steps down beside the river, look at the rock formations and walk through the tunnel and caves that lead off the gorge. The glass-floored cafe overhangs the ravine, so younger visitors can watch the activities below from above before or after a walk. The site also runs instructor-led outdoor activities such as gorge walking, canoeing and abseiling, which suit older children and teenagers, and it has a shop and a campsite. The paths are uneven, steep and can be slippery, so it suits children who are confident on their feet and grown-ups who will keep a close eye on them. Nearby, the village and reservoirs of Nidderdale give plenty more room to explore for a full day out.

Closed on Christmas Day. Summer Friday and Saturday evening cafe opening. Activities and events such as the Dark Skies Festival run on separate dates.
