Nidderdale Museum occupies the old workhouse building in the market town of Pateley Bridge, in the Yorkshire Dales. Its displays recreate rooms and working spaces from the last two hundred years of life in the dale, including a Victorian parlour, a cobbler's shop, a general store and a schoolroom, with thousands of objects shown in original settings. Children tend to enjoy spotting old household items and comparing the school room with their own classroom. The building is laid over two floors, so visitors can take their time and move between rooms at a comfortable pace. The museum is run by volunteers and suits families on a rainy afternoon, history enthusiasts and anyone curious about rural life in the north of England. Opening is seasonal and limited, so it is worth checking the calendar before setting out.
