Bolton Castle is a 14th-century castle in the village of Castle Bolton in Wensleydale, in the Yorkshire Dales. Families can wander the castle rooms, which are furnished and include tableaux in some spaces, then head out to the medieval-style gardens, which take in a maze, a herb garden, a rose garden and a vineyard. Daily displays of hawks and owls, an archery demonstration and a wild boar feeding session give younger visitors something to watch and learn from. The castle runs family events, including a family evening at Halloween, and the tea room offers a break in the middle of the day. Because the castle has spiral stairs and uneven surfaces, it suits visitors who are comfortable with historic buildings more than those who need step-free routes. Check the seasonal closure before planning a visit, as the castle is shut through the winter months.

Seasonal: closed for winter 2 Nov 2026 to 5 Mar 2027. Mary Queen of Scots: The Exhibition runs 6 Mar to 5 Sep 2027 as a paid add-on.
