What’s there

  • Limited parking

No general public parking at the gallery. Four extra-wide disabled bays for blue badge holders are at the rear of the museum building (per the gallery's accessibility page). Street parking and the Leisure Centre car park are a short walk away (per the Pannett Park site).

Only facilities we’ve confirmed are listed — anything missing here we simply haven’t checked, rather than know to be absent.

Pannett Art Gallery sits in Pannett Park in the centre of Whitby and shares its building with Whitby Museum. The permanent displays are mostly 19th and early 20th century paintings, with two main collections: the work of the Staithes Group of Artists, and the Weatherill family of painters, whose pictures often show Whitby harbour and the boats and people of the coast. Families with younger children will find plenty to do without needing to know much about art. There are large jigsaws of paintings to piece together, painted canvases and a sample of weaving that visitors can touch, and printable word searches and colouring sheets based on the collections. The gallery is also a Children's University learning destination. Temporary exhibitions by local art societies and schools change through the year, so there is often something new to see on a return visit.

Questions parents ask

Is it suitable for young children, or is it better for older kids?
The gallery does not specify which ages it suits best. The current autumn activities include 'Share a Story with a Frog', which is designed as a family activity exploring Pannett Park and the exhibitions, suggesting there is content for children, but you may want to contact the gallery to discuss what would work for your child's age.;Share a Story with a Frog autumn activity; current exhibition activities
Is there a café, or should we bring a picnic?
We haven't confirmed whether there is a café at the gallery. Pannett Art Gallery is set in Pannett Park, which may offer picnic possibilities, but you should contact the gallery to check facilities before visiting.;set in the peaceful and charming grounds of Pannett Park
How long should we allow for a visit?
The page does not state a typical visit length. This will depend on which exhibitions are on and how long your children spend exploring, so it's worth contacting the gallery if you want guidance for your family.;no information provided
