The Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum occupies the charity school building in the heart of the village of Great Ayton, where James Cook received part of his education in the late 1730s. Inside, a reconstructed early eighteenth-century schoolroom shows how lessons were taught in Cook's day, which gives children a hands-on sense of what school looked like centuries ago. Interactive displays follow Cook's childhood on the family farm, his later voyages and his death, and a gallery covers the history of the village. The museum is small, so a visit suits a relaxed hour rather than a full day, and it pairs well with a stroll to the bronze statue of Cook on the High Green. The venue's own site describes it as a good place to visit for all of the family, and it also welcomes school groups by arrangement. Volunteers staff the museum and a small shop sells books and souvenirs.
