A small, volunteer-supported museum housed in a former 1836 Methodist school room on The Green in Reeth. It tells the story of Swaledale and neighbouring Arkengarthdale through a growing collection of objects, with a strong focus on lead mining, local geology and fossils, farming tools and the traditional barns of the dales. Children are encouraged to handle things: there are hands-on tools used by lead miners, a sunday school harmonium to play, mystery objects to identify and a pair of pockets to try on. Audio recordings of local people help bring the valley's characters to life. A quirky gift shop sits alongside the displays. The museum suits families visiting the Yorkshire Dales who want a short, friendly indoor stop, and it pairs well with a stroll around the village green. Opening is seasonal, so check ahead before travelling.
