The Strid is a famous narrowing of the River Wharfe, where the water is forced into a channel only a few feet wide, set within Strid Wood on the Bolton Abbey estate. Families come to follow the colour-coded, surfaced woodland trails through this ancient sessile oak wood, look down on the fast-moving water from the viewpoints, and watch for wildlife such as roe deer, otters, kingfishers and woodpeckers. The wood is known for its bluebells in spring and its colour in autumn. The estate is clear that the water is dangerous, so younger children need close hands-on supervision and should stay well back from the edge. The green trail from the Cavendish Pavilion to the Strid is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. A tea room sits in the wood, and the Priory ruins and stepping stones are a short walk away for a longer day.
