The Ingleborough Estate Nature Trail is a waymarked walk through woodland above the village of Clapham, following a lake and a river valley to the entrance of Ingleborough Cave. The surface is a wide gravel track that suits pushchairs and most families with younger children, though a few stretches are slightly uneven and climb gently. Along the way there are information boards about local history and wildlife, and a family trail featuring the Mimpish Squimbies, a set of mythical characters hidden around the lakeside and among the rocks and trees. The walk can be combined with a guided tour of Ingleborough Cave, a show cave with well-lit passages and rock formations, which many families treat as the highlight. A café sits at the start of the trail, and the walk can be extended on foot towards the summit of Ingleborough for older children and adults who want a longer day.
Questions parents ask
- Is there food at the nature trail, or should we bring a picnic?
- The Old Sawmill Café is situated at the entrance to the trail, serving great coffee, delicious tray bakes, and an ever-changing menu using seasonal, fresh and local food.
- How long should we allow for the nature trail?
- The main trail is 1.3 miles of woodland walking. The site offers walking routes for a variety of abilities, so time needed will depend on which route you choose and whether you combine it with other activities like visiting Ingleborough Cave.
- Does it work if the weather is bad?
- The nature trail is woodland walking outdoors, so heavy rain would make it muddy underfoot. Ingleborough Cave is indoors and well lit, offering an alternative if weather is poor, and could be combined with a café visit.
- What is the Mimpish Squimbie Family Trail?
- It's a family adventure where you collect a trail map and set off to find the miniature homes of mythical creatures tucked away along the lakeside and amongst the rocks and trees along the nature trail.
