Facilities

A small, volunteer-run museum near the harbour in Kirkwall, collecting and displaying domestic and military wireless equipment. The collection runs from early kit sets and 1930s receivers through to transistor radios, and there is a particular focus on wartime communications in Orkney, including the Netherbutton radar station. Children with an interest in technology, gadgets or the Second World War will find plenty to look at, and the displays are clearly labelled. The museum is compact, so it suits a short, focused visit rather than a full day, and it makes a handy stop while in town. It is an indoor venue and is open seasonally, so families should check the current times before setting out.
Open April to September; closed for winter.
