Skara Brae is the best-preserved Neolithic settlement in Western Europe, with nine surviving ancient dwellings that visitors can explore via a path overlooking the ruins. The prehistoric houses still contain original stone 'dressers' and box-beds, and you can visit a replica Neolithic house to see what the full interior might have looked like. The visitor centre displays artefacts such as gaming dice, tools and jewellery found on site. The site is part of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site, and nearby stands Skaill House, a 17th-century mansion. A digital guide offers a fact-finding quiz or deeper exploration of nearly 5,000 years of Orkney's history.
Open daily all year with seasonal schedules: summer 1 Apr-30 Sep (09:30-17:30) and winter 1 Oct-31 Mar (10:00-16:00); closed 25-26 Dec and 1-2 Jan.
