St Magnus Cathedral, known as the 'Light in the North', was founded in 1137 by the Viking Earl Rognvald in honour of his uncle St Magnus who was martyred in Orkney. The cathedral belongs to the people of Orkney and its doors are open to all.

Set in the heart of Kirkwall, this magnificent 12th-century cathedral is one of the best-preserved Romanesque buildings in Scotland. Families can explore the fascinating upper levels to see the clock mechanism and bells, the cathedral's eclectic collection of artefacts, and enjoy the spectacular view of Kirkwall from the base of the spire.

The cathedral is free to enter and offers a peaceful, inspiring experience for visitors of all ages. The St Magnus Centre next door has a souvenir shop and facilities.

Open all year. Mon-Sat 09:00-17:00, Sun 13:00-17:00.
