Dalemain is a historic family home on the northern fringes of the Lake District, with a Georgian front enclosing much older Tudor and medieval rooms. Guided tours of the mansion move through several centuries, from a 12th-century fortified part of the house to 18th-century interiors, and the house includes a small Mrs Mouse's house that children often find on the way round. Outside, the garden is known for its roses, rare plants and a topiary dragon and earth giant in the Low Garden, and there is a dedicated children's garden. The tearoom serves homemade food in an old part of the house, and the estate has parkland walks that link to the nearby village of Dacre. The site is also home to the World Marmalade Awards and its festival in spring, which brings a lively atmosphere for families. Some areas, including the Low Garden and the upper floors of the mansion, are not easy to reach for everyone, so families with buggies or limited mobility should check access beforehand.
Marmalade Festival on the last Saturday in April; plant fair in June; harvest festival in September. Himalayan blue poppies May to June; roses June to July.
Questions parents ask
- Is the mansion and gardens manageable with a pushchair and a mix of ages?
- The mansion tour lasts approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour, but numbers are strictly limited and booking in advance is advised. The garden has no restrictions on visitor numbers and can be purchased on the day, though we have not confirmed whether it is fully buggy-friendly.
- What should we allow time for, and which ages get the most out of it?
- A typical visit is 90 minutes. The mansion suits all ages from toddler to teen with its collection of objects and stories, whilst the award-winning garden with its animal topiary, rare plants and private spaces appeals across age groups.
- Is there a café, and can we bring a picnic?
- There is a tearoom where you can stop for morning coffee, light lunch or afternoon tea. We have not confirmed a picnic area, so it is worth checking directly if you prefer to bring your own food.
- Is there parking, and how far is it to walk from the car?
- Parking is available at Dalemain. We have not confirmed the walking distance from the car park to the entrance.
- Can dogs come with us?
- Dogs are welcome at Dalemain.
