No general on-site parking; disabled-visitor parking only in the Outer Ward. Nearest public car park Devonshire Walk (CA3 8UL) is next to the castle (charged, not managed by English Heritage).

One of the most besieged castles in England, Carlisle Castle guarded the Anglo-Scottish border for hundreds of years and survived seven sieges between 1174 and 1461. The castle held Mary Queen of Scots prisoner in 1568. You can explore the Tudor battery, the 12th-century gatehouse, and the recently conserved keep with its 15th-century carvings on the second floor. Today it houses Cumbria's Museum of Military Life, which traces the Border Regiment's 300-year history. A World Builder trail lets you build your own city while exploring.
