Kirklinton Hall and Gardens is a 17th-century hall that is being restored, set in around twelve acres just outside Carlisle. The gardens are the main draw for families. They include a part-walled kitchen garden, orchards, a bog garden, rose terraces, a woodland walk called the Faerie Glen and a Children's Garden with a sandpit and a play house. Pigs, ducks and rabbits live on the grounds, which suits younger children who like to look and feed them. The site is best known for its weekly Thursday market, when food and craft stalls are set up and a tearoom serves light refreshments. Picnics on the grass are welcome. The hall also hosts festivals and events, so opening days vary, and families should check ahead before travelling.
