Eskdale Mill is a working watermill in the village of Boot, at the head of Eskdale in the Lake District National Park. Its original machinery is driven by water wheels, and visitors can follow the route grain once took from the field to the bag through a set of small historic rooms. The displays are interactive and aimed at all ages, so younger children can watch the wheels turn and join in the hands-on activities. Outside there are wooded grounds, a meadow, gardens and a nature trail, along with a model waterwheel to play with and picnic benches beside the cascades. The mill makes a good rainy-day or slow-paced afternoon, and it is a short walk from Dalegarth station on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway. The site has steep steps and uneven ground, so sturdy footwear is advised.
Open April to October Sunday to Thursday; November to March on selected school-holiday days only.
