Small National Trust car park with designated mobility spaces and a drop-off point. Non-members pay through the JustPark app; the venue asks visitors to set this up before arriving. Not suitable for coaches or campervans; parking is about 300 yards from the house.

Townend is a traditional yeoman farmhouse in the Troutbeck valley, lived in by the same family for more than 400 years and given to the National Trust after the Second World War. Its rooms are filled with carved oak furniture, old farming tools and household objects, and the library holds a remarkable collection of books that belonged to the Browne family. Families can wander through the house at their own pace or join the themed guided tour, which suits older children who enjoy stories about how people lived long ago. Seasonal events such as Victorian Christmas days and Halloween candlelit tours give younger visitors something to look forward to. The cottage garden and the surrounding valley make a gentle walk from Windermere, and the house is small enough that a visit need not take long. Most of the house is up steps, so families with buggies or limited mobility should plan ahead.
