Hill Top is the farmhouse Beatrix Potter bought in 1905 and used as the setting for many of her children's books. The house is kept much as she left it, with furniture, china and the famous dolls' house on display, and the rooms show many of the scenes that appear in her illustrations. Outside, a cottage-style garden and orchard have views that will be familiar to anyone who has read the stories. Younger visitors often enjoy spotting real-life places from the books, and there is a small shop and a second-hand book nook. Dogs on leads are welcome in the garden, and farm tours run on selected dates. Visits to the house are timed, so families are advised to book ahead, especially when arriving by car. The site has some steps and uneven ground, and the upper floor of the house is reached by stairs.
Questions parents ask
- Is Hill Top manageable with a buggy or young children?
- The site has uneven surfaces, cobbled paths and four steps up to the entrance, with an alternative smooth path available. An all-terrain wheelchair is available at Visitor Reception. The upper floor of the house has no wheelchair access, but a video of those rooms is available on a tablet.
- How long should we allow for a visit?
- The page does not specify a typical visit duration, so this depends on your family's pace and interests in exploring the house, garden and shop.
- Is there food at Hill Top, or should we bring a picnic?
- There is no café at Hill Top. A picnic area is available in the orchard with accessible picnic benches, so bringing your own food is a good option.
- What should we know about parking and the walk from the car?
- Parking is very limited and pre-booking your admission is required if arriving by car. The car park has a maximum stay of 2 hours. An accessible parking space is located at the farmhouse itself; please ask at Visitor Reception for details.
- Can we visit Hill Top in wet weather?
- Hill Top has both indoor and outdoor areas. The house itself is indoors, though it has uneven floors and narrow corridors. The garden has steps and uneven surfaces, so wet weather may affect outdoor exploration.
