A World in Miniature Museum occupies the basement level of Houghton Hall Garden Centre on the edge of Carlisle, and it suits families who enjoy looking closely at small things. The collection is made up of room sets and scenes built to a twelfth of full size, including period rooms, a kitchen, living rooms, miniature gardens, street scenes and a theatre interior. Many pieces are copies of antiques, paintings and china. Because the displays are small, older children and adults tend to get the most from them, while younger ones enjoy spotting the details. The museum is indoors, so it works as a wet-weather option, and the garden centre's cafe, food hall and plant areas are in the same building for a break before or after the visit.
