Set in a former granite quarry in the Lake District, this small museum gives families a hands-on look at the region's quarrying and mining past. A narrow gauge railway runs into the old quarry, and children can ride the train, look at the large yard of vintage excavators and cranes, and explore the indoor geological and mining displays. There is also a reconstructed underground mine tour and mineral panning, where visitors pan for minerals. The site is run largely by volunteers and is also home to the Vintage Excavator Trust, which holds working demonstration weekends. Most of the visit is outdoors on the quarry site, so a dry day suits best. Families should check the current season before travelling, as the museum opens seasonally.
Seasonal: Easter to end of October half term. Steam and diesel train timetables vary; check the venue's site.
