Paradise Mill is the working factory floor attached to the Silk Museum in Macclesfield, a former silk mill that kept its original pitch pine interior and rows of Jacquard handlooms. Visitors can wander through at their own pace, or join a guided tour where a guide demonstrates how the silk was woven and explains the punched-card system that is an early ancestor of computing. Children can follow an interactive trail that asks them to imagine working in the mill as a young Victorian millworker, and adults can listen to recorded accounts from twentieth-century workers. Weavers in residence are restoring and using the looms, so there is often live weaving to watch. The building is listed and has uneven floors, so it suits families who are happy with a historic, slightly old-fashioned space rather than a hands-on play venue. It makes a good half-day pairing with the Silk Museum next door.
