The Anson Engine Museum sits on the site of a former colliery in Poynton and tells the story of the internal combustion engine. Its collection of gas and oil engines is large, and many of the machines are restored and run during visits, so children can watch them in action. A steam engine section sits in the memorial building, and there are displays on the local pits and the Vernon estate. Monthly live demonstrations of blacksmithing and bodging give visitors a look at traditional crafts, and a giant model of Poynton around 1900 shows where the collieries once stood. Free children's fun sheets and a quiz are available, and there is a brass rubbing area. The museum is run by volunteers as a charity and has a tearoom and gift shop. Families should know the engines can be loud, and children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
