A small museum in the village of Langton Matravers that tells the story of Purbeck stone, from the geology of the different stone beds to the quarrying and masonry trades that built local churches and houses. Displays include apprentice pieces, a large collection of stonemasons' tools, samples of masons' craftsmanship and many photographs from the past. A reconstructed section of underground quarry working and a rebuilt quarry capstan give younger visitors something to look at closely. A short audio-visual introduction, around twenty minutes long, sets the context before you look round. The room is compact, so it suits a relaxed visit rather than a long outing, and older children interested in geology, local history or craftsmanship tend to get the most from it. School groups can book guided tours.
Seasonal opening April to September; closed in winter except by appointment.
