Gold Hill Museum sits in two historic buildings at the top of the cobbled hill made famous by a well-known bread advert. Eight galleries trace the story of Shaftesbury and the surrounding countryside, from Roman and Saxon finds through to rural and market life, with Dorset's oldest fire engine, handmade Dorset buttons and fine lacework among the highlights. Younger visitors can work through an explorer's quiz and hunt for the button mice hidden in the display cases, and there is a quiet cottage garden with seats in sun and shade. The museum is run by volunteers and is compact enough to suit a short family visit. All the rooms are reachable by wheelchair and buggy, and a lift serves the first floor.
Open from late March to 1 November 2026 according to the venue's site.
