Chavenage House is a privately owned Elizabethan manor of Cotswold stone, still lived in by the family that has owned it since 1891. Visits are guided tours of the interiors, which include a family chapel close to the house, a Great Hall with stained-glass windows, panelled rooms and 17th-century tapestries. The house has Civil War associations and a ghost legend, and it is well known as a filming location for television drama. Older children with an interest in history are likely to get the most from a visit. The house is not wheelchair accessible and has steps and uneven floors, so families with buggies or limited mobility should ask before booking. The owners advise that children are accompanied by an adult at all times. Visits run by reservation, usually as pre-booked group tours.
