Berkeley Castle is a Grade 1 listed medieval fortress on the edge of the town of Berkeley, still the family home of the Berkeley family after many centuries. Families can join a guided tour of the castle interior, which takes in the great hall, the armoury, tapestries, paintings and silver, and hear stories of the castle's past, including the murder of Edward II. Outside, terraced gardens with a lily pond and seasonal planting lead down from the walls, and a butterfly house runs during the main season. The castle runs family activities through the year, and there is a restaurant in the walled kitchen garden. Some parts of the castle are steep or uneven, so younger children and pushchairs may need extra care. The estate is best suited to a relaxed half-day or longer visit, and it is a popular place for school trips and special events such as its Halloween programme.
Seasonal opening late March to late October; the Butterfly House runs during the main season. Garden tours in June.
