Dr Jenner's House is the former home of Edward Jenner, the country doctor who pioneered smallpox vaccination, set in the historic market town of Berkeley. The house is open to visitors as a museum, with displays and artefacts that trace Jenner's work and the wider interests he pursued, including natural history, fossil hunting, music, poetry and hot air ballooning. Outside, an acre of garden includes a physic garden of herbs and the rustic Temple of Vaccinia, where the first vaccinations were given. Families can follow the Jenner Trail through the town to see other buildings linked to his life. The museum runs a rolling programme of events and an education programme for school groups and families, and there is a small shop and a vinery where visitors can sit down. It suits older children with an interest in science, history or the outdoors, and younger visitors who enjoy exploring a garden.
Winter closure; prebooked school and group sessions continue during closure.
