The Chapter House is the surviving part of Merton Priory, a major Augustinian house founded in the early twelfth century and dissolved in 1538. The remains sit in an enclosure under the A24 Merantun Way, preserved after the site was redeveloped for a supermarket. Run by volunteers as a heritage museum, it tells the story of the priory, its scholars and its links to medieval history, including the Statute of Merton and early royal ceremonies. Families can explore the ruins and the displays, and younger visitors are pointed to a complete virtual model of the priory built in Minecraft. The museum also produces learning resources for schools. Opening is seasonal and limited to Sundays, so check the website before travelling.
Sunday openings April to October when open; currently closed for building works with no firm reopening date.
