A museum about windmills, housed inside a heritage windmill on Wimbledon Common in south-west London. Its exhibits cover windmills and milling, local history and the Scouting movement, and they are designed for both younger and older visitors. The mill dates from 1817 and its sails have been restored, so on selected weekends a ranger releases the brake and the sails turn for a short time in the afternoon. Entry is free, with donations welcome. The surrounding common, run by a charity, gives families plenty of space to walk around afterwards. Pre-booked group tours and school visits can be arranged on weekdays throughout the year, which suits classes and clubs as well as family visits.
Walk-in opening is seasonal (British Summertime). Sails turn at about 2pm on selected weekends, every five weeks, weather permitting.
