Red House is the Arts and Crafts home that William Morris had built for himself and his wife Jane in the 1859 to 1860 period, designed with his friend, the architect Philip Webb. It is the only house Morris commissioned, created and lived in, and it sits behind a long brick wall in a residential part of Bexleyheath in south-east London. Visits are by pre-booked guided tour, which takes families through the rooms, where the decoration and wall paintings made by Morris and the Pre-Raphaelite circle can be seen. Older children with an interest in history, design or art tend to get the most from the tour. Outside, the garden is a small green space with arts and crafts style planting, an apple orchard and a rose arch, and there is a garden snug to sit in. It suits a relaxed outing rather than a busy day of activities, and younger children may need entertaining between rooms.

Seasonal opening May to October; house and garden closed outside these dates.
