Severndroog Castle is an 18th-century Gothic tower set among ancient woodland on Shooters Hill, one of the highest points in London. Run largely by volunteers for a charitable trust, it is a compact historic building rather than a large attraction, so it suits families who enjoy a short walk through the woods, a bit of local history and a treat afterwards. Visitors can climb a spiral staircase to a viewing platform for wide views across the city and surrounding counties, and the ground-floor tea room can be used without a ticket. Older children may find the stairs and the climb to the top the most memorable part. The castle also hosts seasonal events, and woodland trails are close by for a longer outing. The upper floors are reached only by stairs, so the visit is not suited to buggies or wheelchairs beyond the ground floor.
