Chard Museum tells the story of this South Somerset town across several rooms of local objects in a converted 16th-century thatched building. Displays cover the town's geology, the fire of 1577, the lace industry and Lace Riots, and the aeronautical experiments of John Stringfellow. Visitors can see a recreated consulting room for James Gillingham, the artificial-limb pioneer, a Victorian schoolroom, and a collection of agricultural machinery made by a local firm. Volunteer stewards can give individual tours, which helps younger visitors who want to ask questions. The building is listed and has steps and narrow stairs, so some areas are harder to reach. Dogs on leads are welcome, and an outdoor field with agricultural exhibits offers space for a family picnic.
