The East Somerset Railway is a preserved steam line running through the Mendip countryside from its base in the village of Cranmore. Families can ride a round trip of about five miles behind steam locomotives, a journey of roughly thirty-five to forty minutes. Visitors can ride as many times as seats allow on a day visit, and the engine shed and workshop can be seen on most running days, where volunteers work on restoration. A small displays centre celebrates the railway's history, and the station has a café and a shop. Through the year there are themed events such as Santa trains and spooky specials, which give younger children something to look forward to. Steam enthusiasts and families alike will find plenty to see on a relaxed outing.
