Cothay Manor is a medieval manor house set in the countryside near Wellington in Somerset, built around 1480 on the site of an earlier hall house. The house is listed at Grade I and is presented as a family home, with visits made by guided tour rather than a self-guided museum walk. Its historic rooms include a great hall with a medieval roof structure and panelled dining room, which can give older children a tangible sense of how people lived in the past. Around the house are gardens of roughly twelve acres, with terraces, a rill garden and herbaceous borders to wander through in warmer months. The setting is quiet and rural, so it suits families who enjoy history, gardens and a slower pace, and it is best checked ahead since access is seasonal and by arrangement for some visits. Younger children may find the tour and the lanes to the site less engaging, so families are advised to plan around that.
