Roche Abbey is the ruined remains of a medieval Cistercian monastery set in a dramatic valley south of Maltby. The surviving gothic transept walls rise almost to full height, and the layout of the monastic buildings is easy to follow on foot around the site. Families can explore the ruins, look for the gatehouse and the infirmary hall of the lay brothers, and enjoy the landscape that was shaped in the eighteenth century. Picnicking by the stream is a popular plan, and the cliff path offers a view across the grounds. There is no café or toilet on site, so it suits a simple outdoor visit with older children who enjoy history and wandering. Dogs on leads are welcome. Access to the admission point is by a rough path from the free car park, so sturdy footwear helps after wet weather.
Closed through the winter; reopening in spring per the venue's page.
