Ashdown House is a 17th-century chalk-block house set in a valley on the Berkshire Downs, surrounded by woodland. It was built as a hunting lodge in the 1660s and is linked to Elizabeth of Bohemia, the exiled Queen of Bohemia, whose family history gives the place its story. Families can book a guided tour of the house, which climbs a long staircase to a roof with views across three counties, and can spot several species of deer around the grounds. The surrounding Ashdown Woods are open to walkers all year, with paths through beech and oak and space for a picnic. The house is only open on set days by pre-booked tour, so families with younger children should check ahead and plan a woodland walk as the main outing.
